Citizens, Mayor Protest Six Flags' Alcohol License

ARLINGTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Concerned citizens along with the mayor of Arlington are protesting Six Flags' recent application to obtain an alcohol license.

The Arlington theme park is within their legal rights to get the license, an alcohol license, and the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission says they meet their requirements.

"We don't see a protest based on a community standard very often," said TABC Lt. Charlie Cloud.

For decades, Carolyn Mitchell and her family have been coming to the park. "We plan our whole agenda summers around Six Flags," she said.

Mitchell said she doesn't want that family fun to stop. So she testified in front of an administrative judge at the TABC hearing Tuesday.

Christi Cambell started a petition, hoping to stop the sale of alcohol at Six Flags. "I don't want to ride through a park full of puke because somebody got drunk and decided to ride the Superman," she said.

"I think it's dangerous," Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck said. "I think the two don't mix: the big machines, the big rides."

But Six Flags officials say they've been serving alcohol at their other location in San Antonio and want to do it here as well.

"We feel like we can do this in a responsible manner otherwise we would not do it," said Sharon Parker with Six Flags.

The hearings will continue Wednesday.

The judge has 60 days to make her recommendation to the TABC. In order to recommend against the license, the judge will have to be convinced that the sale of alcohol at the park is harmful to the community, a danger on the rides or a hazard on the nearby roads.
