Plano Food Pantry Dealing With Parking Problems

PLANO (CBS 11 News) ―

God's Food Pantry is located in a small Plano strip mall. There are a certain number of praking spots that come with the location. When the designated parking spots are taken, clients and volunteers have to park across the street and make their way across a busy 4-lane thoroughfare.

Workers say it's always a squeeze inside the food pantry, in the 3400 block of E. 14th Street. Each day, volunteers and those seeking assistance seem to cram every corner.

There isn't only crowding inside; parking room is a problem outside. The pantry has six designated spots.

The property owners have warned the non-profit that if clients or volunteers park in other spots they will be towed.

"Sometimes I can get a parking spot like today. Sometimes I can't," food pantry client Harry Hosack said.

Hosack lives in Plano and comes to the pantry to pick up groceries about once a week. At times, he says he's been asked to park across 14th Street and that's a problem. "I'm handicapped both my knees are just about gone," he explained.

Pantry operators say they're concerned about clients like Hosack and countless numbers of children who cross the busy street. "We have a lot of single mom's has maybe 5 or 6 little ones with her and for her to cross 14th that is a major concern," said pantry worker Linda White.

Property manager Rich Whites says he understands the concerns, but his hands are tied. "The owners of the property have established the rules for parking out there. Unfortunately it's my job to enforce the rules. I don't want to, but I will."

CBS 11 News tried to contact the property owners, but as of Wednesday afternoon they hadn't returned the calls.

Workers at God's Pantry say donations have been down the last few months. Should the parking issue not be resolved they say they don't even have the money to move to another location. Click here to find out more about God's Food Pantry or to make a donation.

Owners of the 276 Flea Market say they will donate a portion of their profits to God's Pantry.
