Area Residents Compete In SPAM Cooking Contest

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― SPAM lovers gathered at the State Fair of Texas on Tuesday morning for the 2008 Great American SPAM Championship.

The annual cooking contest was designed to find the greatest appetizers created using one key ingredient, SPAM.

When the competition ended, Dallas resident Cathy Hamm emerged as the winner with her 'Thai Orange Peanut Dippers.'

The first place prize was $150 cash and a trip to SPAM JAM, a special event being held this April in Waikiki, Hawaii. There, winning recipes from around the nation will compete for a grand prize of $3,000.

Second place winner Eric Wilder of Dallas was awarded $50 cash for his recipe of 'SPAM Caprese' and third place winner Kim Thacker of Flower Mound received $25 cash for her 'SPAM Wonton to Ignite Your Senses.'

Contestants could prepare any recipe that they could imagine, as long as the recipe called for at least one 12-ounce can of SPAM (any variety). Dishes were judged on three criteria: taste, originality and presentation.
