21 Things To Do If Your Friend Gets Breast Cancer
(CBS 11 / TXA 21)
1. Organize meals for your girlfriend's family when she goes for treatment.
2. Act on any impulse to call, email or send a card to your girlfriend. Chances are, it's just the right time... and just what your girlfriend needs to hear.
3. Shawls or blankets are great gifts for your girlfriend to take to chemo treatments.
4. Bracelets or other jewelry are great gifts too. One survivor named Sherry would wear a frog bracelet to chemo treatments. Her niece and nephew sent it to her. She said it was a reminder they were there with her.
5. If your friend's stuck in the hospital overnight, spend the night with her. Patty, another survivor, said she felt so loved when someone did that for her.
6. Shop for pretty scarves for your girlfriend when she loses her hair.
7. Call the
American Cancer Society and ask for the brochure on skull caps and wigs so your girlfriend can start shopping.
8. Cards are powerful! Sherry said she saved every single one and took them to chemo with her so she wouldn't feel alone.
9. Remember the rest of your girlfriend's family. Gift cards to restaurants are great!
10. Lend your housecleaning service to your girlfriend or hunt down the local companies that do free cleaning for breast cancer patients.
11. Offer to transport your girlfriend's children to activities.
12. Bring your girlfriend's kids along with your family on outings. It gets their minds off their mom's cancer for a little while.
13. When your girlfriend's having chemo, bring her a gallon of ice cream! Patty said it's the only thing that tasted good during treatment!
14. Tell your girlfriend she's beautiful, even when she's bald.
15. Tell your girlfriend your problems too. She may have cancer, but she's still a listener and wants to help you! Plus, it's nice to focus on other people's struggles for awhile.
16. Don't say, "Call me if you need anything..." Chances are she won't call. Just ACT.
17. Plan a surprise party on the 5th year anniversary of her diagnosis. Statistics show it's a HUGE reason to celebrate life!!!
18. Go with a girlfriend to chemo. She will be cold and need someone to drive her home.
19. Weight is a big issue. Lots of women gain weight during treatment, and it often pushes her right into menopause. Be super-sympathetic.
20.
Participate in a walk. It means the WORLD to a cancer survivor!!!
