Pharmacies all across Dallas County are
now offering the H1N1 flu vaccine to people in the five at-risk categories.
Kroger, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Tom Thumb and an independent pharmacy called Dougherty's will administer the vaccine to at-risk people, both insured and uninsured. Wednesday afternoon CBS 11 News learned that CVS Pharmacy has jumped onboard and will begin giving the H1N1 vaccine next week.
Some pharmacies were busier than others, but at the Tom Thumb store in east Dallas people are lined up.
The Tom Thumb stores didn't start administering the vaccine until 3 o'clock Wednesday. Officials with the company say that's because they wanted to make the vaccinations readily available for children getting out of school.
There were about 10 people lined up when the east Dallas Tom Thumb started giving out the vaccine. Over at Dougherty's Pharmacy in North Dallas, people waited for nearly an hour to be vaccinated.
"I think the governmental agencies have done the best they can in seeing that they've distributed to the highest risk people," said Dallas mother Christy Little. "My kids are in college and they've both gotten access to it, although I think my son had H1N1."
Erin White has been searching for the vaccine. "I'm 13 weeks pregnant and I've tried to get the shot at my OB and my son's pediatrician but nobody has it," explained the expectant mother. "So, I heard on the radio this morning that Kroger had it. So, I came over."
White found the H1N1 vaccine at her neighborhood Kroger Store on Mockingbird Lane. "With it being so harmful for pregnant women, ya know, I've really been trying to fight to get it," she said of her quest.
Dougherty's Pharmacy had one of the longest lines throughout the afternoon. Lorna Scruggs has a chronic respiratory illness and said she waited for about an hour. "The doctors don't have it, that's what I couldn't understand," Scruggs said. "I called both my doctor's, but my girlfriend said to come down to the drug store and so here I am."
Walgreens and Wal-Mart are offering the vaccine, but
not at every location.
All of the stores seem to be abiding by the rules and only giving the vaccine to Dallas County residents who are in the high-risk categories.
The vaccine being administered at Dallas County pharmacies came from the Dallas County Health Department. Health officials there say they're expecting another 22,000 doses in the next 10 days.
