Hair Extensions Revealed

You have always wondered how the movie stars do it. One month they have a short and sassy bob hair cut. The next month on the red carpet they have long flowing beautiful curls. Well I am here to tell you how and how much.

Hair extensions have been around for several years, but the technology has improved a great deal. Let's start with the Cadillac of hair extensions Great Lengths. They are 100% natural human hair.

While others use techniques such as welding, waxing, gluing or knotting, which strain and very often can damage your hair to a high degree, Great Lengths is based on a much more gentle bonding technique: a keratin bond. This bond wraps around your hair and is fused.

These extensions cost around $2,000 and are quoted per consultation, depending on how long you want your hair to be and how many colors need to be matched.

You must know there is maintenance involved with these extensions. You need to use a certain brush and product to protect your investment. Also swimming in a pool should be done with caution due to tangles.

Next on the list would be easiXtend 9 to 16 inch clip-in hair extensions. The advertisements claim that "anyone can easily and affordably add length, volume, texture and/or highlights to their own hair with 100% human hair extensions."

I think this is overly simplified. I do my own hair everyday, and I see myself as a pretty good amateur. These weft comb extensions have to be attached to some artfully back combed hair and would take someone doing it themselves a lot of patience.

I do however think they are great choice for special events when put in by a professional, but very high maintenance for daily wear. They also require you have a good amount of hair to anchor them to.

Last but not least is a product called Hair Additions. These most commonly are found in kiosks at the mall are can be very awkward looking. They are usually synthetic hair and a bit cheesy.

I did find some classy, chignon-style add ons. I would recommend you find a perfect color match and part your hair on the side and attach pretty firmly for a sassy "bad hair day."

Play with these ideas and remember hair is fun!
