Historic Dallas Farm Generating Controversy

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― The Samuell Farm has a crop of advocates who aren't happy with the City of Dallas.

The farm sits just outside of the city. It is a preserved and protected parcel of the past.

Samuell Farm was a gift to the City of Dallas. Hugh Brooks and his friends of the farm have tried to pass that gift on to a new generation, but Brooks isn't happy.

"We do all we can because we choose to, but we insist they do all that they must, because they are obligated to," he said.

Preserving and enhancing the experience at Samuell Farm has been a commitment made by the "Friends of the Farm" volunteers.

But the City of Dallas wants a binding contract with the group, complete with rules on maintaining the property. With no contract, the friends have no right to be on the property.

Officials with the Dallas Parks and Recreation Department point to Dallas' Samuell Grand Park, a symbol of urban upkeep and civic pride.

The Samuel Farm is viewed as open space and maintenance is not at the same level. If the friends want the responsibility, it's theirs, the city says. But they must do it now under a contract.

Brooks believes Samuel Farm could be headed back to a time of neglect by pushing him out.
