Holiday Gift Registry: Practical Or Tacky?

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― Amanda Zarbock is registering her family's holiday wish list. She says having a registry means getting less random gifts. She also won't have to wait in line to return anything.

"I ended up doing one for my son since my family lives out of state. It's going to be a great way for them to see what he needs instead of wandering through the store and wondering what to get," said Zarbock.

Many people seem to love the idea.

"We would do it," said Stacey Dewberry. "We've done it for weddings."

"I think it's a good idea for children and grandchildren so grandparents would know exactly what they want," said Gaye Bobo.

But some thought the idea was just tacky.

"It just seems kind of impersonal," said Eric Pruitt. "If someone buys you something, they should now what you want and it should be a surprise."

"It could be considered tacky, however I have teenage grandchildren and asking them what they want, it's always a gift card. But I would prefer to get something more personal," said Bobo.

That's what Zarbock wants too, something personal she picked out.

Etiquette experts say it's not a bad idea. If you decide to make one, make sure the list isn't too overwhelming and include a range of prices.
