Tires Slashed On Every Maypearl ISD School Bus
MAYPEARL (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
It was slow going Monday for schoolchildren in the Ellis County town of Maypearl. Someone slashed tires belonging to the school district fleet of buses, leaving hundreds of youngsters without their regular ride to school.
Was it a school prank or a disgruntled worker? No one knows. But Monday morning there were no buses available.
Maypearl's only elementary school had a pretty packed house, but not one student arrived by bus. Most students received rides from parents or neighbors.
The school district's bus yard turned into a pit crew look-a-like Monday, with teams quickly changing out tires. According to officials, someone slashed one tire of every operational bus in the school district's fleet.
The vandalism meant 13 buses off the road and 375 kids left without their regular ride to school. "People just don't think about the amount to fix it -- for a thrill," said parent Jeanette Pieper.
Maypearl ISD Superintendent Lynn Dehart wants to know who committed the crime and why. "First of all the who? [I have] absolutely not a clue. Why? I mean it would seem that it's somebody who wanted to do some kind of damage to the school district. For what reason, that's the $64,000 question," she said.
In all actuality it's a $3,000-$4,000 question since that's how much the district will have to pay for new tires.
The Cowboy Bank of Texas in Maypearl is offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to arrest and conviction of the school bus tire slasher.
By 3 p.m. crews had all of the buses repaired and the students were transported home as usual.
