Local Company Donates Holiday Décor To NRH Family
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS (CBS 11 News) ―
Someone pilfered part of a popular nativity scene in North Richland Hills. The Christmas crime was caught on tape. But neighbors showed the family the spirit of the season is alive and well.
By Friday night, the Herreras' lawn will be even brighter.
A local company makes many of the decorations in front of the Herreras' home. So when someone swiped Baby Jesus -- the company stepped up to fill the void.
Step into the Gemmy showroom in Coppell and its hard not to smile.
Santas of every kind are everywhere.
On Friday the company will bring some of its magic to a family that nearly lost its holiday spirit.
"For us, we just thought it'd be a nice way to give back to the community," said Jason McCann, Gemmy Senior Vice President of Marketing.
McCann said when one of his coworkers saw CBS 11's story about thieves stealing a baby Jesus and other lawn decorations from the Herrera family, she immediately recognized some of the company's pieces. She asked if there was something the company could do to help the out the family.
McCann says he was especially touched by the story of a little boy who encouraged the Herreras to keep decorating even though they had been ripped off time and time again.
"He said he wants to come by my house everyday like he did last year, because we do this every year and he thinks this is Santa's house," explained Gloria Herrera.
To keep the front yard looking like the North Pole, Gemmy is donating more than $1,000 worth of decorations to the Herreras. Everything from the family's missing see-saw and Christmas bulbs to a couple of new nativity sets - complete with Baby Jesus. Plus some things the Herreras didn't have before.
"I felt for her. That was a terrible sensation, but I also know the other side. It was when she heard the magic of the child saying hey I really like to see your stuff. That's what it's all about," said McCann.
If someone comes back to steal the new decorations, the family's surveillance cameras will be rolling.
