Diet Fools Body Into Thinking Woman's Pregnant

Patsy Goodwin is giving the Dr. TED Diet a try. Four years ago -- at age 40 -- she had a baby.

Her metabolism, and health all changed.

"I developed gestational diabetes and my physician stated that I really needed to lose weight," she explained.

Goodwin says she tried everything from exercise to fad diets, but the weight always came back.

So, now she's back in the OB/GYN's office, telling her body it's pregnant again.

Dr. Jeffrey Caruth runs Plano Aesthetics and is as busy as ever helping North Texans lose weight on the "Dr. Ted" program.

The diet is closely watched by calorie counting counselors and involves some limited exercise. But, the third component is not so common.

"The HCG cream is very important to help people feel well and feel good," he explains.

HCG is human chorionic gonadotropin. It's the hormone detected in urine and blood that gives positive results to those early pregnancy tests.

On the "Dr. TED Diet," women apply the cream twice a day and the hormone is absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin.

Caruth, however, says the cream is not what makes one lose weight.

"It gives you a feeling of well-being. It does help with your metabolism and it does have some natural appetite suppressant effects. So alone, it doesn't do anything other than give you a different feeling," he says.

Joanne James, a traveling businesswoman, believes it is one of the reasons she's lost 30 pounds while still maintaining her endurance.

"I talk to people everyday. I feel better than I ever felt; sleeping better, skin looks better, I'm not as moody. It changes their whole life," she says.

Caruth says some studies show HCG cream helps mobilize fat, but he says the true impact of the cream, which may give a woman that pregnancy sensation, remains a mystery.

Goodwin and others say it's solved their battles.

"I haven't been hungry that's what I love about this diet," Goodwin boasts. "I feel better and I have lost weight."

HCG cream is not approved for use in weight loss by the Food and Drug Administration. It's approved use is for women involved in a reproductive technology program.
