No Charges For Star-Telegram Columnist

Dave Lieber Won't Face Felony Charges; Returns To Writing Column

(CBS 11 News)

Charges will not be filed against Star-Telegram columnist Dave Lieber. The 51-year-old admits to leaving his 11-year-old at a McDonald's restaurant in Watauga following an argument with the boy.

Lieber, 51, turned himself into police on Tuesday. He faced felony charges of child abandonment with intent to return and child abandonment/endangering a child. He was released the same day on $4,000 bail.

He wrote about the Aug. 13 incident at a Watauga McDonald's restaurant in a recent column. In that column, he wrote about how a breakfast stop at the fast food joint escalated into the father driving away and leaving his son to walk home.

Dubbed The Watchdog, Lieber said his son wanted to leave the restaurant before his father was ready. The two argued as Lieber tried to finish his meal. The elder even wrote the two sat at separate tables for part of their time at the restaurant.

"I tried to ignore him. But my buttons were pushed," he admitted.

Someone at the restaurant called 911 and the police were there when Lieber returned a few minutes later to retrieve his son.

After his arrest, the Star-Telegram suspended Lieber from writing his Watchdog column, but Executive Editor Jim Witt said Friday " Dave will resume writing the Watchdog column immediately."
