Keeping Your Marriage Recession Proof

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News) ― Experts say money is one of the main reasons why marriages fail. As many Americans struggle to survive in this economy, some marriages are also taking a hit. Whether it's the latest trend in clothing, or a deal on a new car, purchases like these can drive couples apart, especially when money is hard to find.

Psychologist Ronald Gruen says since the downturn in the economy, he's seen an increase in the number of couples arguing about money. Dr. Gruen admits it can be difficult to keep the harmony when money is tight, but it's possible.

Take Ron and Irene Connelly. They've been married for 15 years and they say no matter what they don't argue about money.

"You have to value each other. Your relationship is more import than money. His feelings are more important than a dress," Irene said.

Several years ago, Ron took a major pay cut to work with a start up company. To get through that lean period, they focused on their family vision and goals. He bagged his lunch and they didn't buy any new clothes.

Today, his business is thriving and their relationship is intact. Plus, they don't worry about the economy. In fact, they're in the midst of renovating their kitchen.

They say the decisions they made a few years back put them in a position where they're not worried about it anymore.

For families struggling right now, Dr. Gruen said there are steps you can take to preserve your relationship.

First, a couple should agree on an amount of money they can spend without having to account for it. This will help prevent resentment. Next, come to an agreement on big purchases and avoid secrets. By making decisions together you "share" responsibility.

Dr. Gruen said when you disagree, work hard to find the common ground. You may not be able to get all of what you want, but at least some of what you want. In the end, no matter what's in your bank account, you can have a happy marriage.
