South Dallas Pastor Won't Head NAACP

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―

He's been a leading pastor in South Dallas for the past 25 years and Friday evening Dr. Frederick Haynes learned he will not be the next national president of the NAACP.

Dr. Haynes informed TXA 21 News early Friday evening that the organization has decided to go with someone else. The name of the new NAACP President isn't known at this time.

The text message sent by Pastor Haynes said, "They decided to go with someone else. The church was a deal breaker. Thank you for your prayers and support."

Pastor Haynes had said earlier that if he were to get the position he still intended to keep his pastoral position with Friendship-West Baptist Church.

Dr. Haynes was the lone finalist for the organization's executive search committee and was presented to the full board Thursday in Baltimore. Late Friday afternoon the board made the final decision to go with someone else.

Dr. Haynes remained in Baltimore Friday evening but will hold a news conference at Friendship West on Sunday.

For the past 25 years, Dr. Frederick Haynes has seen his Baptist church grow from a small congregation to 10,000 members.

"It's just vital that if we are going to make a difference in the community, that we are a part of the community," said Dr. Haynes.

If Dr. Haynes had gotten the position he would have been the first NAACP national president from Texas in the organization's 99-year history.

Dr. Haynes was interviewed before going Baltimore and had said, "I'm just honored that they looked this way."
