Tired of the treadmill? Bored with the indoor bike? It can happen to any exerciser. And while it's important to mix up your workout routine, taking that workout outside is tough with the temperatures that are hitting North Texas.
"It is actually fairly dangerous," said Dr. Abraham Jacob with The Heart Hospital, Baylor Plano.
Exercising during the day, or even the night, in the Texas summer heat can be life threatening. It can lead to heat exhaustion or even a heat stroke. But there are some ways to avoid becoming overheated when exercising outside.
Pay attention to warning signs that the heat might be getting to you. "You're feeling very fatigued, tired, nausea, vomiting, cramps, muscle cramps," said Jacob. "Those are kind of signs and symptoms where it tells you that, you know what, your body temperature needs to be cooled. And so, you need to come inside and get some fluids in you."
And if you're set on getting out of the gym, take the proper precautions. Make sure you are well hydrated. Wear light clothing. Take advantage of early morning and evening shade.
Also, pay attention to the heat index. "Any value less than 80 is a comfortable zone for most people," said Jacob. "When you look at a heat index of greater than 90, that is extreme heat. That's where you should be very cautious. Any sort of heat index value of greater than 100, it's very hazardous to your body. And anything greater than 110 is actually dangerous."
Remember, it is not worth risking your heatlh for a workout.
