Altering Your Diet Can Help Fight Belly Fat
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Belly fat is a direct byproduct of taking in more calories than your body burns. But instead of starting up another diet, try changing the way you eat. It could lead to a healthier you.
"I am, as of today, off my blood pressure medicine," Yvette Elkins said. It's a big first step for a woman who reached 182 pounds because of belly fat. "Mayonnaise was my thing. Everything with mayonnaise."
But not anymore.
Just six weeks under the guidance of dietician Ashley Mullins at Baylor Healthcare and Elkins is down 15 pounds. She's eating healthy and can't believe that the road to reducing belly fat is so simple. "It was one visit that changed me," she said, "to where I walked out and went, 'Oh my God, that is so simple.'"
Blasting belly fat includes exercise, but all the pushing and pulling won't do any good if you don't take control of your calories.
So, how much should you eat?
Your personal numbers will vary, but here's the plan tailored to Elkins' height and weight: 350 calories for breakfast, 400 to 500 calories each for lunch and dinner, a 150 calorie snack and a 100 calorie treat. As for what foods to eat, think meats and lean heavily on fruits and vegetables.
To help control your portion sizes, use a divided paper plate. In the larger area where you would normally place your meats, fill it with vegetables instead. Use one of the two smaller sections for your meat and the other for a starch or sensible dessert.
Using the same approach, Elkins plans to drop another 30 pounds of belly fat.
And you can do it too, with an approach to eating that makes sense instead of making you overweight.
