Small Changes Help Local Man Lose 55 Pounds

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― He tried just about every diet on the planet, but it was some small changes that lead to big weight loss for Maurhys Eckley. "I topped out at 257," he said of his weight. And he has since lost: "It depends. I'm right about 55 [pounds lost] right now."

Eckley's method has been two-fold.

First, a practical program of caloric intake kept him between 1200 and 1800 calories a day. "Each piece of toast or each piece of bread is 40 calories. My breakfast is about 220 calories," Eckley explained. "I used to use an oil. This is just some kind of cooking spray."

"People don't understand this, that it's a matter of small calories," said Dr. Priscilla Hollander of Baylor Health Care. "People say, 'I'm not eating at McDonald's. I'm not eating all these desserts. I'm not doing all this,' but it's the bites here and there. It's really, weight gain is a matter of small numbers."

Second, walking three miles almost every morning has changed his life. "It's nice to feel like you halfway look decent, rather than the people looking at you going, 'Oh, my God,'" Eckley said.

But the 55 pound weight loss wasn't always easy. "The first 12 pounds I lost were the hardest," Eckley said, "because that's when you're wanting to go raid a donut shop, eat a candy bar, drink a beer, do all the fun stuff that you don't do anymore. So, you have to re-educate yourself."

Dr. Hollander also advises monitoring your weight. If you get four or five pounds over a set point, make adjustments to get back in control. He is hoping that this advice will help him maintain his weight loss.

"You can cheat on this diet," said Eckley, "but there's always consequences in cheating. If you had or have a bad day, it's okay. You can always compensate.

"You got to be in the right mindset to do it," Eckley stressed.
