Not Just For Kids: Recess Can Help Adults Too
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Think that recess is just for schoolchildren? Think again. The organized outdoor activity is keeping adults fit too, and allowing them to have a little fun at the same time. It's like a modern P.E. class, where people past their playground days can get in shape and let out that inner child.
It's called Recess Fitness, and it's purpose is to get you fit and having fun. Craig Keaton is the program's instructor. "The whole idea is that we wanted to bring more real life exercises, fun and play back to what's happening."
Classes include everything from tossing a ball to an adult version of Simon Says. Activities are designed to get your heart pumping while working out muscles at the same time.
It might not look as if Keaton's students, including Dawn Andreas, are getting much of a workout. But, as she explained, "What I've found with Recess is that I am sore in all the right places, without actually trying to create that soreness in the body."
"Our body doesn't work in isolated muscle movements," Keaton said. "This is constantly using the entire body as it's made to be used."
"We're squatting, running," Keaton continued. "We're doing all the things that you would see in, kind of, a day-to-day situation."
"I definitely think my overall body strength is much stronger," Andreas said. And that's not the only reason she keeps coming back. "It's outside. It's a great group of people. Tons of laughter. Great friends and cute boys."
Recess Fitness currently meets twice a week in Dallas.
