Local Students Practice Thinking On Their Feet
GRAND PRAIRIE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
After a quick group workout, students at Louise Cabaniss Elementary School in Grand Prairie get ready to jump, kick and calculate. It's a special activity that combines study skills with physical fitness.
The school has two break rooms. One is used for students in kindergarten, first grade and second grade while the other is for third and fourth graders. These rooms serve as exercise areas for this fun activity.
"You get to learn math, which is one of my favorite subjects, while you exercise," said student Emma Barrington.
Physical education and health teacher Leeann Wenkman explained, "Each of the rooms have 22 stations in them that require the kids to complete an academic task while performing exercise." These stations work brains and muscles. While rowing, the students learn about shapes. On a miniature trampoline, they count numbers.
"It's fun because you get to jump on the trampoline," said student Carson Parr.
There is no doubt that these kids are getting a full-body workout. "Upper, lower, core -- we have signs at each station to tell the kids what it is they are working on," said Wenkman.
"In the morning, if I come here, it usually wakes my brain up," said student Fope Akin.
To start the program this year, the school received the Meredith Hatch Memorial Grant funded through the Mansfield Independent School District's education foundation.
"It's a great way to just add another 30 minutes to their activity level for the day," said Wenkman.
In addition to this workout, the students also get 150 minutes of physical education each week, more than the 135 minutes required by the state. Plus, they have a 30 minute recess daily.
To celebrate Louise Cabaniss Elementary School's workout program, Borden's Elsie the Cow shared a nutritious milk break with some fourth graders at the school.
