Keep Halloween Treats From Playing Tricks On You

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― An interesting fact about Halloween candy, the spooky holiday ranks third for candy sales during the year.

Many people aren't looking forward to the treats though, because it can trick them on their way to getting healthy.

Honea Rothermel is on a weight loss journey.  She's worked hard to lose 10 pounds and doesn't want Halloween and all the candy that comes with it to hurt her progress.

"I personally love lots of sweets, I'm more of a Starburst/Skittles kind of girl, my husband is more a chocolate fan, so between the two of us we cover the spectrum quite well."

She's already taken steps to keep some of those candy cravings at bay by not stocking up on her trigger sweets.  "Given that I have been trying to lose weight it is a struggle because if I get the candies that I like a lot of times I'm giving the kids one and taking one myself, so this year the deal was my husband decided to get chocolate."

Buying candy at the last minute can also be a good idea in that you won't be tempted to eat if, and even if there is a ton left over, there is a solution says Honea.  "I might give it to a charity, I might save it put it away in the freezer and use it for like favors for parties and it just helps me to keep it out of my eye sight and if that happens that's a little easier for me."

If you want to completely avoid that Halloween candy temptation don't serve candy with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, try something like raisins, trail mix or even rice crispy treats.

Honea already has her candy plan.  "Sometimes I'll do candy apples… even though their candied sometimes with just caramel and nuts on them i don't feel as bad."

Remember, be creative.  There are a ton of options to keep you on track this Halloween.
