Get Healthy Texas: Losing Belly Fat
Belly Fat Can Lead To Other Health Risks, Doctors Says
(CBS 11 / TXA 21)
Three and a half years ago, Lisa Bosshard was a very unhealthy weight of 320 pounds and was a size 32.
Flying was a challenge for Bosshard.
"Being able to go down an airline aisle, without turning sideways and being able to sit in my seat without taking up more than my seat and not encroaching on people around me," she said of the 2007 trip she and her husband took to Hawaii.
Belly fat is a layer of fat well below the surface of the skin. Brought on by genetics, overeating and often a sedentary lifestyle, it can create major -- and in some cases -- deadly health risks.
Dr. Henry Prost of Baylor Grapevine said weight in the belly area could lead to other health problems.
"Some people who tend to put on weight in the belly area seem to have a higher incidence of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease," he said.
Getting rid of belly fat began with gastric bypass surgery for Bosshard, who has now lost an entire Amy Sorley, who weighs 150 pounds. Sorley, herself, is down from a size 12-14 to a size 4-6.
If someone has a family history of belly fat, that person should be aware they have a higher risk factor for diabetes and heart related issues, Prost explained.
Get Healthy Texas will begin a six-week look at belly fat, the dangers it can lead to and the road map to getting rid of it.
"Just simply going back and (as) I looked at the pictures," Bosshard said. "I'm shocked at the size I was."
