More than 100 school kids helped First Lady Laura Bush reseed a hillside at the Trinity Audubon Center in Dallas on Sunday. Together, they made and threw seed balls as part of First Bloom, a project helping urban youngsters get in touch with the natural world.
"I learned about the seaweeds and different kinds of plants that help our nature," said Ana Ibarra, one of the young participants.
First Bloom is a national project that started in Texas a little more than a year ago.
Bush talked about how being outdoors has always been an important part of her life. "We've seen bears and wolves on the hiking trails. Once, a teenage moose wandered through our campground," she recalled.
"I was so excited," said Esmira Camargo, another one of the project's participants. Many of the young girls there were excited, because they had help from some other very special guests.
Local heartthrobs the Jonas Brothers were also in attendance, side by side with the participants getting dirty hands, urging the use of native plants and instilling the values of environmental stewardship. They became the consensus attraction for crowds of autograph seekers.
"Omigosh, they are so cute," said Ibarra. "I love them."
Nick Jonas, the youngest of three, told the crowd, "We're trying to do all that we can now to encourage all of you that it is so important to take in this beautiful, just amazing world that we live in. And I can see that you're doing that. We're all very proud of you."
"It was a great experience," said Juan Espinoza, "seeing nature and the First Lady and the Jonas Brothers."
