Cash Incentives For 'Bringing Your Own Bag'
NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
There are BYOB incentives at two big retail store chains that are 'going green'. In this case, BYOB means 'bring your own bag'.
Whole Foods and smaller grocery store chains are already encouraging customers to bring their own bags.
Now, CVS Pharmacy customers will receive a $1 rebate every fourth time they use a non-disposable bag.
Target Stores new program also means change in your pocket. Target is taking five-cents off at the register for every non-disposable bag a customer brings in to use. The company tested the program at 100 stores last year and found a 58-percent reduction in plastic bags used.
Debra Rutledge always takes reusable bags to the store with her. Checking out at Target lately, she noticed cashiers giving her a discount. But she didn't know why. "They just started taking it off. They do it, so I let them," Rutledge laughed.
The program is something Target plans to do from now on as part of a green initiative. Making cents for the customer made sense for the company.
Chris Russell is a Target store manager in Hurst. "With 1-point-5 billion transactions annually for Target you can just imagine the effect that would have in our landfills," Russell said.
"It makes more sense. I think I would do it," Gretchen Freeman said. Freeman was checking out at the register while her 5-year-old daughter studied the candy racks. Like many shoppers, Freeman said she'd like to try using non-disposable bags but hasn't found the time for it yet. "In a hurry, don't have time to go home and get my bags or they're not in my car. Convenience. Being a mom," Freeman said.
Target has already started giving customers the non-disposable bag discount but if more people haven't heard about it, that's because their big advertising campaign doesn't roll out until November first.
