6 Grand Prairie Employees Getting New Hybrid Cars

GRAND PRAIRIE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― With rising gas prices and growing concern for the environment, the City of Grand Prairie is going green.

The city bought six hybrid cars for the staff members who rack up the most miles: building inspectors in the Housing and Neighborhood Services Department. Each one drives up to 125 miles a day.

Each new Prius cost $24,000 and will be in service for 7 years. They think they'll break even on their purchase in about 4 or 5 years.

"We're getting twice the mileage immediately, and this decision was made before the gas prices really escalated, so it's working out real well for us," said William Hills, the Director of Housing and Neighborhood Services.

The city is looking to buy hybrids for other departments.
