Arlington Celebrates Opening Of Paddling Trail

ARLINGTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A new exercise trail is now open in North Texas, but you can't run on it. You have to paddle your way down the path.

Thursday night, the Arlington residents celebrated the grand opening of the new Paddling Trail at Lake Arlington.

Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck officially dedicated the water route Thursday evening, sending dozens of people running for the shoreline with kayaks and canoes in hand.

"We talk about obesity. We talk about childhood obesity, and this is the answer to it... things like this," said Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck.

It's the first of its kind in North Texas. The location is completely dedicated to kayaks and canoes. It hugs nearly 11 miles of shoreline, and you don't have to be an expert to enjoy it.

"It makes something you can go around and have something to look at if there's fauna or animals or stuff like that," said kayaker Craig Sindorf.

For seven-year-old Isabelle Sonntag, there's an added bonus. "You have to put your muscle into it, and it helps you exercise."

The Paddling Trail was a team effort between Arlington, Fort Worth and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Plans are already in the works for a second trail on the Trinity River.
