Citizens Protest Proposed Navarro Co. Power Plant

NAVARRO COUNTY (CBS 11 News) ― Citizens are speaking out against a proposed power plant, and one group even used sick children to make a point.

Its proposed location is south of the metro area, but critics say its impact will be felt far and wide. The battle is taking place in the Navarro County town of Richland.

The proposed plant would take natural gas that has been removed from the ground and would convert it to energy to power one million homes.

Never-the-less, the Pin Oak Creek Plant is drawing strong opposition from Navarro County residents. Nearly a hundred people went to a public hearing Thursday night to voice concerns about air pollution. Several children with serious health conditions asked the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to deny the plant's permit.

Neighbors say several coal burning plants in nearby counties continue to pollute the air. Although natural gas plants generate far less emissions, residents say even the slightest amount will only add insult to injury.

The TCEQ says emissions from the proposed gas plant will be minimal and will not have a significant impact on the air quality.

A vote on the permit is expected by mid December.
