Will North Texas Wind Power Save Consumers Money?

NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― There's new pressure to bring more wind power to North Texas. Today a coalition of state legislators and consumer groups called for action from the state's Public Utilities Commission [PUC].

Last month, oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens told CBS 11 News that he has started off footing the bill for the project. Pickens is spending billions to build nearly 700 wind turbines in the Texas Panhandle. But the power is useless to North Texans unless new transmission lines are built.

Clean Energy for Texas, is urging the PUC to approve $6 billion worth of transmission lines to carry wind power from West Texas to the rest of the state.

The coalition says more wind power could help reduce power prices by billions of dollars, create jobs and reduce pollution.

Experts estimate that after picking up the $6 billion price tag, for the new lines, it would take five years for consumers to save a few dollars a month.

The PUC could make a decision as early as Thursday .
