Highland Village Boy Recovering From Meningitis
HIGHLAND VILLAGE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The mother of a three-year-old Highland Village boy who contracted bacterial meningitis wants to warn other parents about the symptoms.
Bacteria meningitis is rare and deadly. Its symptoms look just like the flu, but can ravage the body and even kill. One of the telltale symptoms is a neck so stiff, a person can't lower their head.
Bacterial meningitis requires heavy duty antibiotics.
Viral meningitis can go away on its own.
The meningitis bacteria are contract from the environment. It enters the body, gets into the spinal cord and travels to the brain.
For Evan Verfurth, it started with an ear infection.
"It is an extremely aggressive bacteria," said Evan's mother, Trish Verfurth. "When this happened, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Evan was fighting for his life."
After contracting bacterial meningitis last December, he now has to learn how to walk, talk and even swallow all over again. He goes for physical therapy at Our Children's House, and his parents know he has a long road ahead of him.
The Highland VIllage community has joined together and is sponsoring events to raise money for the medical equipment that Evan needs - that insurance doesn't pay for. The three-year-old will need various types of health equipment as he grows older.
