Doctors Shave Heads To Show Support For Patients

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― Four doctors at Children's Medical Center are on a mission for their patients.

"Coming into the hospital and having your child diagnosed with cancer is probably one of the most devastating things that can happen to parents," said Dr. Martha Stegner.

It is devastating for the young patients as well.

After the diagnosis comes a barrage of testing and treatment: radiation, chemotherapy and the sickening side affects.

One-year-old Ashton Pollock's cancer led to the amputation of his leg, but doctors here have also saved his life.

"All I know is these people up here are angels," said the child's mother, Kim Pollock.

Now these angels have a few less locks.

In a show of solidarity, four pediatric oncologists shaved their heads Thursday.

"We're thankful in pediatric oncology that we have a very high cure rate. The majority of our children are long-term survivors of their cancer," said Dr. Tim McCavit.

Across the country thousands of people are shaving their heads for an organization called St. Baldricks.

St. Baldricks is a major fundraising organization for childhood cancer research. Its sole purpose is to help scientists come up with better treatments and perhaps someday a cure.
