Is The Flat Belly Diet For You?

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―

It's one of the hottest new diets out there, and it may sound like a dream come true.  Lose up to 15 pounds in a month and get in bathing suit shape by summer.

But is the "flat belly diet" for you?

It's the body part a majority of women say is their biggest problem, love handles.

The editors of Prevention magazine launched the diet and published a book about it.  The cornerstone of the plan is monounsaturated fatty acid food or "MUFA's" for short.  They're they good fats: oils, nuts, sees, avocado, olives and dark chocolate.  According to the diet, research shows that they can prevent weight gain in your stomach.

The plan starts with a four day anti-bloat jumpstart.  Then it restricts you to four 400 calorie meals a day, each with a "MUFA" food, such as almond encrusted chicken breast.

Internist Donna Casey approves of the diet in general.  "The only thing I would add in that is not in the book is exercise.  Exercise will rev up your metabolism so you can burn more calories just even while you're sleeping."  She also said "It makes sense, it combines a lot of things from other diets and takes the best and leaves the worst."

Monounsaturated fats don't clog your arteries, she says, so they are safe in moderation.  She does take issue with the name; because the only way to target your abdomen is again, exercise.
