Chances are, if you have dark complexion skin peels won't work for you - that is, until now. There's a new beauty "quick fix" that's showing promise for women with all skin types.
The economy is sagging, and so is the cosmetic surgery industry.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports, business is down as much as 30-percent. The decline is drawing more attention to new cheaper cosmetic procedures and one North Texas doctor's office is practicing a new beauty "quick fix."
The 'fix' is a new facial peel that Mary Kay Evans, of Dallas, was ready to try it. She's on a self-improvement mission after losing 70 pounds in the last year. "With the weight loss, there is a boost of confidence, and so you want the 'total package'," she said.
After losing the weight, Evans developed cosmetic problems, including acne and scarring. Evans tried several over-the-counter products, but when she didn't get the results she wanted, she turned to Innovations Medspa in Dallas for a VI Peel. The manufacturer says it will erase fine lines, improve acne, shrink pores, and tighten skin.
First, technicians cleanse Evans' face. Next, her skin type is analyzed - this determines the regime Evans will follow after the peel. Following one more wash with alcohol, it's time for the application which consists of a combination of acids and vitamins.
Evans says the procedure wasn't aggressive or painful but she did feel some slight discomfort. "It doesn't really feel like anything. It's smooth. It's strong and it's hot!" she explained.
On the second pass, the technician focuses on areas around Evan's mouth and the scarring around her cheeks. By that time, Evans' skin is numb and the burning is gone.
In less than 15-minutes, the VI Peel is complete. Evans described the sensation by saying, "I feel okay. It's not tight, so I like that."
After the procedure Evans is given skin treatments to follow-up with at home, including a moisturizer, because three or four days after the procedure her skin will begin to peel. It looks a lot like flaking caused by sunburn.
Dr. Bill Johnson owns Innovations Medspa and has been overseeing the peels in Dallas for six months. "It is doing a very strong re-surfacing," he said. Johnson also talked about how his patients have experienced no adverse reactions. "None so far
beyond the bit of burning and peeling we expect as part of the procedure."
The peeling lasts for about two days.
Dr. Johnson says Evans was an ideal candidate because this is the first peel available to people with darker skin.
He also recommended the peel to light-skinned Reasha Hedke. She wanted to erase some skin damage and acne without being down for too long. "I have some social events coming up," Hedke said.
Six weeks after the procedure Hedke says she sees significant lightening in her freckles and that her face is more vibrant.
Evans says her acne faded nicely but she plans to go back to Dr. Johnson for another peel to continue working on the discoloration in her face.
The peels can be repeated every two weeks.
