Lots Of Beauty Products, But Which Ones Work?

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ― There are millions of beauty products that make big promises, but what really works?

A shampoo that stops hair breakage. A lipstain that lasts, without drying. The claims are endless, and the products are countless.

"We help to cut through that clutter and help women make better purchase decisions," said Ron Robinson, a Cosmetic Chemist. He's quoted in Allure magazine in its analysis of thousands of products, and user interviews, to find the 'Best of Beauty.'

"Products are getting better and better," said Robinson.

One of the favorites is Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Shampoo.

"It actually looked healthier. It didn't look as dead from all the dying and heating products I was using on my hair. It had more shine to it," said Dana Eckstrom, who lives in south Philadelphia. She says the Pantene shampoo started making a difference in just five days.

"It contains a complex from a plant called cassia. Cassia's only found in India. And that works to form a netting around each strand of hair that protects it from damage," said Robinson.

Dana also tried another beauty best, Dove's Deep Moisture Body Wash.

"So when I started using this, I definitely noticed a difference. I didn't have like the dry skin," said Dana.

"I've never seen a product that moisturizes and hydrates so well," said Robinson.

For the face, the winner is Olay Pro-X Age Repair Lotion with SPF 30. It's a combination of antioxidants and vitamins that reduce fine lines.

"Really you're getting prescription like results without a prescription," said Robinson.

And number four on the hit parade is CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain.

"They're amazing," said Daneen Baird, from Philadelphia, who loves the CoverGirl stain because unlike other long lasting products this one doesn't dry out the lips.

"I still have yet to see something else that comes close to their staying power, the way they moisturize, and the way they look great," said Daneen.

The CoverGirl Lip Stains are water based and contain glycerin, for moisture. Most of the products on the 'Best of Beauty' can be found in grocery or drug stores, and are reasonably priced, so you don't have to spend a lot of money to give your beauty a little boost.
