Pharmacists Rate The Best OTC Medications
HALTOM CITY (CBS News) ―
Pharmacist Jennifer Fix gives all her clients in Haltom City personal attention.
She knows finding the best remedy for common aches and pains isn't easy since "There are an awful lot products available."
That's why the American Pharmacists Association surveyed more than 1000 pharmacists to see what they recommend as the Best Over The counter Medications.
"As a consumer, I think people have a need for information," the veteran pharmacist says.
Following is the list of what Fix recommends for what ails her clients.
Sudafed recommended for congestion
Mucinex DM For cough
"It loosens phlegm and liquifies mucus so it helps to loosen up the congestion in your chest," Fix explains.
Acetaminophen or Tylenol for generic pain relief and tension headaches
"I think Tylenol would be the best place to start for a headache," she explains.
For allergy symptoms, like runny nose and watery eyes grab some
Claritin-D - For allergy symptoms or Hay Fever
"This has an anti-histamine that does not cause drowsiness and it's a decongestant," Fix explains.
Naphcon-A for Red, itchy eyes
Prilosec - the top pick for fighting heartburn
Neosporin this topical ointment gets the nod for cut and scrapes
Fix says it's "going to reduce scarring and improve the recovery time."
Fix reminds consumers that over the counter medications can cause drug interactions or side effects. Experts say just because a medication is recommended, that doesn't mean it's always the best choice for one's condition.
"Patients should not just use OTC products indiscriminatingly and believe they're all safe to take. They really need to use them with a little education and they can get that education from their local pharmacist," she advises.
