Support groups for women with cancer are a necessary morale boost in difficult times.
Medical research studies have shown that African-American women in particular may be especially vulnerable to the ailments associated with the disease, CBS station WFOR-TV reports.
In 2004, Lisa Lofton and three of her friends founded Sojourners With Healing Hearts, which "provides a breast cancer support group for women of color as well as physical, mental and spiritual support".
Twice monthly they meet to offer encouragement to women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and to find ways to educate the community about their unique vulnerability to breast cancer.
"For African American women, even though we have the lower risk of being affected by breast cancer disease, we have the highest mortality rate," said Lisa Lofton, CEO of Sojourners With Healing Hearts, Inc. She added, "And because of that, it has really increased the passion that I have to reach out and touch other breast cancer survivors in the community."
Sojourners has become known for its inspirational calendar.
"The calendar has been very well received in the community as well as over the nation. We have sold out every year," Lofton said.
"We use it for a marketing tool to inform the community that there is a breast cancer support group for women of color. It is also to provide medical information concerning good breast health tips. And thirdly the calendar is a fundraiser that we have to provide funds for us to assist other breast cancer survivors in the community," she went on to explain.
Lofton hopes others will receive inspiration and encouragement from the words of women who have survived breast cancer.
