FDA Issues Public Health Advisory For Chantix

WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBS 11 News) ―

Today the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a Public Health Advisory for Chantix, the controversial anti-smoking drug.

In a news release Friday, the FDA said "it appears increasingly likely that there may be an association between Chantix and serious neuropsychiatric symptoms."  The FDA says because of that, it has asked Pfizer, the maker of Chantix, to increase the prominence of the safety warnings on its packaging.

Just two weeks ago, Pfizer changed the drug's label to warn patients about possible serious side effects.  The company says patients on Chantix should be monitored for changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior.

CBS 11 has been covering reported problems with Chantix for months, and our stories have unveiled many stories of problems reported by users of the drug.  Look at the "Related Stories" list to the right for these stories.
