Procedure Helps Those With Chronic Allergy Issues
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
For the 40 million Americans with Chronic Sinusitis, spending time outdoors is anything but enjoyable. The pressure and pain can be unbearable.
A little more than a year ago, tending to her garden would have been impossible for Myriam Counter of Colleyville. "I couldn't go outside for three four days, I had to stay inside, I couldn't see the light."
Chronic Sinusitis was causing her to have massive headaches. Counter couldn't breathe and she was tired all the time. "I tried different kind of allergy pills but nothing helped and for my headache. I took Advil, Tylenol, but nothing helped until I went to the doctor."
Counter went to Doctor Ford Albritton for a procedure called balloon Sinuplasty. Balloon Sinuplasty uses a small catheter and balloon to quickly open and expand blocked sinuses. The balloon actually causes tiny bone fractures.
"The good news is the fracture actually helps us. It takes a narrow opening and will increase it and the bone will heal where you fracture it. Therefore, it will stay dilated and stay open," said Dr. Albritton.
The procedure is done without removing tissue, meaning a faster recovery and less pain. "Patients should notice results anywhere from immediately to 14 days after," according to Dr. Albritton.
Myriam Counter can now enjoy her rose garden without worrying about her sinuses. "For me, it worked, so I think it's a good idea to have it."
Doctor Albritton says the procedure takes about an hour and most patients go home the same day. It is covered by insurance. To find a doctor in your area performing the procedure,
