Saying Good Morning To A Bad Breakfast

(CBS) During this decade, more and more Americans have turned to Starbucks or other fast-food chains to start off their day with coffee. Not surprisingly, many are not only getting their coffee, but also their breakfast from the fast-food giants.

"The fast food breakfasts are just dripping with fat and sodium," said University of Miami nutritionist Sheah Rarback said. "If you are eating this everyday, go to your doctor. Check your cholesterol."

The nutritional content for some early morning fast-food offerings may have you needing more exercise than before. WebMd compiled their list of some of the best and worst fast-food breakfast offering.

For example, McDonald's has a few good offerings like the Egg McMuffin, which has around 300 calories and 12 grams of fat. If you can handle pancakes without syrup, McDonald's Hotcakes only have 350 calories and 9 grams of fat.

But, on the same menu, the Deluxe Breakfast with regular size biscuit, but without syrup carries 1070 calories and 55 grams of fat.

Some of the other worst breakfast choices from fast food chains:

  • Burger King: Enormous Omelet Sandwich (790 calories, 45 grams of fat)
  • Jack In The Box: Sausage, Egg, Cheese Biscuit (740 calories, 55 grams of fat)
  • Carl's Jr.: Loaded Breakfast Burrito (820 calories, 51 g fat)
On the other hand, here are some of the best breakfast choices:

  • Burger King: Ham Omelet Sandwich (290 calories, 13 g fat)
  • Dunkin' Donuts: Blueberry Bagel (330 calories, 2.5 g fat)
  • Subway: Cheese Breakfast Sandwich on 6" bread (410 calories, 18g fat)
"The good choices are the one's that don't have amounts of really bad stuff," Rarback said. "But that doesn't mean they have a whole lot of good stuff."

Experts say you should try and find a low-calorie, low-fat item for breakfast no matter where you are. A study from the University of Minnesota showed that over a 5-year period, regular breakfast eaters typically had the lowest body mass indexes, or BMI.
