Supermarket Shopping: Healthiest Packaged Foods
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Doctors, dieticians and chefs have teamed up with Women's Health Magazine to come up with the healthiest packaged foods you can buy.
The magazine consulted with registered nurse and Dallas chef Aimee Fuenhuesen and other experts, on items that fight heart disease and prevent weight gain.
"That's kinda how I got my niche in the market
is doing the healthy cuisine," Chef Aimee said.
The list includes Kashi Heart to Heart cereal, Pepperidge Farm 100-Percent Whole Wheat Bread, and Barilla Plus Pasta. Philadelphia Light Strawberry Cream Cheese made the list, and so did Heinz Organic Ketchup.
Minute Maid Light Orange Juice is a choice for best drinks. So, is Horizon Organic Fat Free Milk. Women's Health also chose Oscar Meyer Oven Roasted Turkey Breast, and Lean Cuisine Four Cheese Pizza.
CBS 11 News checked out with some of the items on the list and then invited Chef Aimee over, to help us create an easy meal.
After chopping up the green onions, basil and tomatoes, they were added to the "seeds of change" quinoa.
Chef Aimee also uses the Minute Maid Light Orange Juice, along with organic mustard and honey to make a special sauce.
She then combines the Smucker's Low Sugar Raspberry Jam and Annie's Naturals Raspberry Vinegar, to start off the fresh salad dressing.
After pan searing the salmon, and boiling the quinoa, Chef Aimee added the Everybody's Nut's Pistachios to a package of Bird's Eye Steam-Fresh Broccoli and brought the whole meal together, in 25 minutes.
These healthier food items are more expensive, but if you are watching your weight or cholesterol, it could be worth the extra investment. Click here to print a copy of Chef Aimee's recipes.
