5-Year-Old's Birthday Close To The Heart

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A 5-year-old heart transplant recipient celebrated her birthday Sunday by leaving Children's Medical Center in Dallas, but not before meeting the mother of the boy who donated her new heart.

Hannah Collie was born without a fully-functioning heart, her left ventricle didn't work.   Two years ago a boy her age, Jalen James Jackson, died from shaken baby syndrome.   Jackson's mother, Shirlonda Taylor, donated his organs and his heart went to Hannah.

Hanna has been back in the hospital for the last 59-days with organ rejection issues, but doctors allowed her to return home Sunday, but not before having a surprise birthday party where she met Jalen's mother for the first time.

"I am (celebrating Jalen), he would've been five this year, so just to see Hannah turn five and know that my son would've been five this year, it is amazing to me," Ms. Taylor told CBS 11 News, "It really is special to see Hannah celebrate her 5th birthday, and today's my birthday too, so, it's great gift."

Hannah's mother wiped away tears as she described what Ms. Taylor and Jalen means to her.  "She's a beautiful lady and she did a beautiful thing and lot of time in your time of need you don't think about it. And she saved a lot of kids' lives including my own.    And you can't give a gift like that back.  You can't say 'thank you' enough."
