NRH Cancer Survivor Heads To Ironman Triathlon

(CBS 11 News) Colorectal Cancer survivor and North Richland Hills resident Larry Branagin soon will travel to Hawaii to participate in the Ford Ironman World Championship on Oct. 11, 2008.

The 62-year-old engineer and tri-athlete recently secured a spot in the competition, which some refer to as the "Super Bowl" of triathlons.

"I have trained for previous Ironman triathlons while battling Colorectal Cancer and am going to Hawaii to prove that the human spirit can accomplish the impossible" Branagin explained. "The discipline that is necessary to train for and Ironman triathlon can also be beneficial in battling cancer."

With chemotherapy and radiation and two surgeries behind him, Branagin looks forward to the 2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike race and 26.2-mile run that's ahead for this triathlon.

He will join the nearly 1,800 others in the 17 hours to finish the race.

Triathlon fans can follow every stroke, spin and stride live on race day by visiting www.ironman.com for real-time race results, live audio and video updates.
