Parkland Receives $75M For New Facility
Parkland Donations Contingent Upon Voter-Approved Bond
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Parkland Hospital announced plans Wednesday for a new facility to include more than 850 patient beds, an outpatient center, office building and additional parking.
Funding for the project will come from public and private partnerships. Reports indicate the hospital has collected $75 million in pledges from private gifts.
Oil and gas executive Trevor Rees Jones donated $25 million. The Annette and Harold Simmons foundation also provided a $50-million gift.
Both donations are contingent upon the actions of the voting public. If taxpayers support the building of a new Parkland, the private donors will too.
In August, Dallas County Commissioners unanimously voted to place a bond election on the November ballot for consideration by Dallas County voters. The bond calls for an additional $700-million to build the new hospital.
The remaining funds would come from taxpayers if voters approve the measure this fall.
Parkland Memorial Hospital was built in 1954 and hospital officials said it is 54 percent undersized for current patient volumes. Additional renovations would result in a 40 percent loss of beds.
County and hospital leaders have worked to find the best solution and said a new facility is necessary.
