Stop The Spread Of Swine Flu With 1 Simple Step

BALTIMORE (CBS) ― It's being called the worst flu season since 1997. The Centers for Disease Control reports the swine flu has killed at least 3,900 people, including more than 500 children.

CBS station WJZ-TV reminds us that one simple step can go a long way toward prevention.

It sounds so basic, but washing your hands properly is essential to controlling the spread of the flu.

From the young to the old, the small task could be the difference between becoming ill and staying healthy.

"It's important to cover all the surfaces of your hands, fingernails and some of your forearms," said Shirely Fox, La Petite Childcare Center.

There's a renewed focus on handwashing.

"We're wiping everything down with sanitizers and making sure that we teach them when they wash their hands," said Fox.

At La Petite Childcare Center in Baltimore, hand hygiene is a major priority. Children are taught to wash their hands for 20 seconds.

Hospitals in Maryland are pushing the same message. Outside Sinai Hospital, a banner hangs with a simple but important message to keep clean hands. Inside, posters also hang.

Alcohol-based gels are the next best thing to soap and water. Experts say don't bother buying antibacterial soaps which are no more effective at killing germs than regular soap.
