DNA Evidence Links Man To 24-Year-Old Murder Case

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― Dallas police say they've solved a cold case involving the death of an SMU student.

On October 13, 1984 Angela Samota was sexually assaulted and stabbed to death. She was 20-years-old.

Detectives say new DNA evidence links 59-year-old Donald Bess to the crime. Police say Bess followed her home from a bar to her off-campus apartment.

Bess was out on parole when police say he killed Samota. A year later, he was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted for three other sexual assaults.

Bess was close to being eligible for parole when information about this case came to light.

A vigil was held at SMU Sunday night after friends and sorority sisters learned police were about to announce a break in the case.
