A deadly shooting involving police in Garland has been deemed a suicide. The armed man was an employee of the General Dynamics plant. After being laid off the man returned to his job, with a gun, on Wednesday.
Thursday there were counselors on hand, brought in to help General Dynamics employees. Those who talked with CBS 11 News said Alfred Jones was distressed after being told he was being let go.
On Wednesday, three Garland Police officers responded to an urgent 911 call about Jones. The 50-year-old veteran machinist worker was one of 42 General Dynamics employees who had been issued a lay off notice around lunchtime.
By 2 pm, Jones had a gun and had returned to the jobsite where he had been employed for the past 17 years.
"What the medical examiner has told us today is that, Mr. Jones died from a single contact gunshot wound to the head," explained Joe Harn with the Garland Police Department.
The police responded to the General Dynamics parking lot and found Jones before he had entered the building.
After an investigation, police determined that the self-inflicted gunshot came after at least one Garland officer shot at Jones. The policeman fired after Jones reportedly pointed his gun at officers.
From his South Garland address, Jones' wife said she knew nothing about the layoffs or her husband taking a gun to the plant.
A spokesman for the General Dynamics facility said there was no indication Jones would come back to harm anyone and he hadn't had any previous episodes of violence. General Dynamics officials have extended their condolences to the Jones family.
Police were alerted to a possible situation with Jones after someone called 911, but officials say they aren't sure who placed the call.
