Road Construction Frustrates Allen Residents

By Selena Hernandez
ALLEN (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― The sight and sound of constant construction is taking its toll on some people living in Allen. The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) has been working on a stretch of Suncreek Drive since the summer of 2008.

After all these months, some folks living in the area want to know when the construction will come to an end.

"The constant noise, as you hear, and the constant ruckus and the danger of the road, it's just gotten to a point where our patience is gone," Allen resident Beth Morley said as she stood just feet away from the major construction project.

Without patience and without the use of her road Morley is 'running on empty'. "So we have a street that normally is not very heavily trafficed, outside of the people who live here, getting everything from delivery trucks to moving trucks," she said of the traffic that's cutting through her quiet community.

It's a situation that Morley says is dangerous at times. "They'll come zipping around this corner, where there's lots of children."

For the past year and a half there has been on-again, off-again construction along a 750-foot stretch of Suncreek Drive.

Last summer the road was closed so crews could lay a new sewer pipe. During the process, they discovered the soil wasn't stable. So after months of testing, crews came back out to rip-up the concrete and strengthen the soil.

Denise Hickey, with the NTMWD, is sympathetic. "We do feel for the community, but we must bring this roadway back to safety standards."

CBS 11 News contacted the NTMWD who said it is working as quickly as possible to get the road back open, but that weather has been a major roadblock. "With the heavy rains, that we received in September and October, construction crews were unable to work on the project," explained Hickey.

NTMWD officials say construction should wrap-up next month, but for Morley and her neighbors the estimated completion time isn't enough. "I want a date. I want to know when it's going to be finished, exactly!"
