N. Texas ISD Faces Overcrowding, Teacher Shortage
by Steve Pickett
RICHARDSON (CBS 11 News) ―
School started Monday, but on Wednesday one mother still didn't have her child in school.
Angeliek Fesser's ten-year-old daughter's school won't let her in. It seems overcrowding and teacher shortages are keeping Jasmine and other children out of their neighborhood schools.
Jasmine and Angeliek now have to walk by a neighborhood school to catch a bus to another campus.
"They have found a school for her to go to, but it's two and a half miles out," said Angeliek.
That's because Richland Elementary has too many children in Jasmine's grade level. The Richardson School District is facing a large number of students in the same situation.
Four hundred children can not gain access to their neighborhood campuses.
"They've given her the choice of riding a bus or being picked up, but there's three schools within rock-throwing distance from my home," Angeliek said.
The school district calls it "overflow." Children are being bussed out, because there's either not enough classroom space or no teachers.
