Three Dead In Corsicana Motorcycle Rally

CORSICANA (AP) ― Three people were killed and three others injured Saturday when a pickup plowed head-on into a group of motorcycles during a charity ride, authorities said.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange said the truck veered into the oncoming lane and struck two motorcycles before rolling over and hitting two more on a rural highway southwest of Corsicana.

Mange said the drivers and a passenger on the first two motorcycles were pronounced dead at the scene. She said the driver of the truck, 54-year-old William Lindsey Jr. of Corsicana, was treated and released from a Dallas hospital.

The drivers of the other two motorcycles were in fair condition at Dallas hospitals, Mange said.

Corsicana High School teacher Leslie McCluney, 34, was among the dead. She was a passenger with her father, 61-year-old Terry Nelson, who also was killed. The other rider killed was David Coley, 54. All three were from Corsicana.

The charity ride was a benefit for the Corsicana High drill team.

"Leslie was a very good science teacher," Corsicana schools Superintendent Don Denbow said in Saturday's online edition of the Corsicana Daily Sun. "She was one of those special people who could connect with her students and get the most out of them."

Former Corsicana Police Chief G.M. Cox was among the riders in Saturday's event. He said he was about "a minute or so" behind the group of cyclists who were struck.

"I don't think there was anything they could have done to avoid the collision," Cox said. "There are some situations that you cannot drive defensively for."

The accident, which happened about 65 miles south of Dallas, is under investigation, Mange said.
