Father Of Abandoned Dallas Baby Seeks Custody

By Sana Syed
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― The mother of a Dallas baby abandoned in June is getting her day in court on Tuesday. Angela Castro is charged with endangering a child after, according to police, she left her newborn child in the hallway of an apartment complex.

The little girl was named 'Baby Bella' after she was found wrapped in a blanket with her umbilical cord still attached. This was in a hall at the Cambridge Court Apartments in the Vickery Meadows neighborhood, where Castro lived in a two-bedroom unit with her mother and father since December 2007.

Police in Dallas said, if the mother had taken the baby girl to a local fire station or a hospital, she would not have faced any charges. Now, however, she could spend years behind bars. "It was a newborn child," said Sr. Cpl. Kevin Janse with the Dallas Police Department. "Not getting medical attention immediately put the child in extreme danger."

"We're grateful the child is healthy now," Janse continued.

Court documents show that the father, William Bynum, did not know that Castro was pregnant. As his little girl now stays in foster care, Child Protective Services is left to decide if Bynum will receive custody of the child.

Bynum said that he hopes the baby, "Knows that she's loved and Daddy's here for her, and our family's here for her, and she's going to have a good home."

If convicted, Castro could face a 20 year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine.
