Despite Code Claims Apartment Residents Still Hot

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― There's new information about the fight over air conditioning at a Dallas apartment complex. Thursday night city code inspectors said the a/c at the Barclay Square Apartments is working.

Despite the claim from officials, some residents say they're still being forced to sweat it out.

City code inspectors say the weather it isn't unbearable at the complex and that the a/c cooling system is sufficient. However, some tenants believe the testing is not being done during the peak heat period.

The dispute has gone on for more than a month. Families have complained about the lack of a/c. The management installed window units in a dozen apartments, but that didn't stop a court hearing, where tenants asked for legal action against the owners.

The judge said the dispute belongs to the City of Dallas, and that's when inspectors returned Thursday.

CBS 11 News visited one family's unit and indeed it was cooler inside, but the concern is as it gets hotter outside, the a/c become ineffective.

"They be saying that it's working, but in the morning when I wake up it's like colder and then in the afternoon it's getting hotter," explained 13-year-old apartment tenant Yolanda Guillermo.

Tenants say the heat is a problem for everyone, especially the younger children at the complex.
