Plano Residents Think Kids Are Hunting Wildlife
PLANO (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Some parents in west Collin County are worried that kids are grabbing pellet guns and hunting down local wildlife. The alleged incidents happened at the Shady Brook Trail near Spring Creek Parkway in Plano.
Helen and John are spending their holiday weekend trying to keep critters out of their backyard. "I was out here working and I just saw something scampering across, and a tail sticking out of the back," Helen said.
The tail belonged to a bobcat. Helen said that the feline probably weighed about 20 pounds, and was going toward Shady Brook Trail, a creekbed and greenbelt that runs through several neighborhoods.
Heather Hollabaugh has also spotted the bobcats. "I've seen a couple," she said. "Some of them are big dog size, some of them are small."
In addition to bobcats, neighbors have spotted armadillos, coyotes and other wild animals.
Now, some residents believe that kids may be taking matters into their own hands.
CBS 11 News has obtained a copy of an e-mail circulating through several homeowners associations in the Plano area, claiming that several young boys walking the Shady Brook Trail pull out rifles and go hunting. The e-mail warns residents to be aware of stray bullets.
Helen and John said that they moved to west Plano for the beauty of nature, and think these kids need to go back to the city. "If I were the kids, I'd leave them alone," Helen said. "They're not hurting anybody."
